Spring time is in the air and there is so much to enjoy. Soon our homes will be filled with food and family, and if you’re up to it, maybe a sunrise service on Easter, March 27th . Some people feel there is a controversy regarding mixing faith with fun on Easter, but those issues come up around Christmas, as well. It is very acceptable to allow your children to experience the traditions we grew up with. If you want to incorporate both faith and fun, there are many creative ways to include biblical Easter lessons, like the resurrection of Christ, with the traditional Easter themes.
A great tradition that has been dipping around households for over 5000 years is decorating Easter eggs. To add a little touch of faith, you could decorate the eggs with crosses and symbols that represent Christ. Another idea is to fill the plastic eggs with little trinkets about the resurrection, like pieces of palm, a rock to represent the tomb, a piece of cloth for the burial shroud, a red ribbon for his sacrifice, and so on. This is something that involves the whole family and can be a fun and creative art project for everyone to enjoy. When hiding the eggs, also consider a little role reversal and have an adult hunt!
Getting the family together to go to church is a great way to celebrate Resurrection Sunday. If you’ve never seen a sunrise service, now is the time to do it. Seeing the sun come up over the clouds while people are worshiping is breathtaking. Another tradition is to watch films that express your faith (throwing in a little Peter Cottontail wouldn’t hurt either!). As for telling your children about the true meaning of Easter, it may be a great idea to discuss with a trusted spiritual advisor on how to explain it. There are also many children’s books that capture the beauty of the resurrection and the story behind this day of remembrance like Lily’s Easter Party, Benjamin’s Box, and The Legend of the Easter Egg.
Easter is a time to honor your faith as well as a time to embrace the beauty of spring time. It is a day where we may bow our heads and it is also a day to enjoy American traditions like the Easter Bunny. And don’t forget how awesome it is to enjoy a beautiful Easter ham! Just remember that there is nothing wrong with experiencing all Easter has to offer and stand for. This year, there are many amazing things to enjoy for the whole family. Make this year one filled with faith, love, laughter, tradition, and don’t forget that famous Cadbury Egg!
