The new year is here, and with that comes the chance to create a new you. The concept of New Year’s resolutions is often viewed as a joke – a promise we make to ourselves that lasts only a few weeks at best. And isn’t that how it usually goes? Every year, you set goals for yourself and you most likely end up breaking them. But why? Is it because you’re too busy? Too tired? Don’t have enough time? Well, guess what? Everyone has the same number of hours in a day as you. Instead of focusing on why you can’t achieve your goals, shift your attitude and focus on how you can reach your full resolution potential and why you should.
Whether you want to lose a few inches, build up some muscle, finish school, get that promotion, or move to the next step in your relationship with your significant other, that goal should be at the top of your list because it’s attainable and it matters to you.
Adjust Your Attitude
Attitude is everything. If you enter into something with a down-and-out spirit, you won’t get very far. Take a deep breath, relax, and just go for it. You’ll be so much happier knowing you tried instead of wishing that you did. When you keep an open mind and heart, even if things don’t turn out the way you wanted them to, you’ll have a better outlook and you won’t be so hard on yourself. As the saying goes, “Give it 110 percent,” and if you do, you’ll have a feeling of pride rather than guilt.
What Do You Want?
By figuring out what you really want, you can achieve so much more. Make a list of things you want for yourself and your life. Next, rank them in order of what’s most important to you. If for some reason the first one doesn’t work out, move on to the next goal and try a little bit harder to achieve it.
If you’re working out really hard every day and still have those last few pounds of pregnancy weight hanging on, it’s okay. Or if you got a B instead of an A on your math test, that’s okay, too. Stay positive, don’t beat yourself up, and give it time. One of the most important realizations you can make is everything is a process: you have to continue to work hard knowing you won’t achieve your goals right off the bat. You also need to realize timing is important. Having a positive attitude will get your mind in the right place to achieve the goals you set for yourself, and perseverance is a necessary trait to acquire.
Setting personal goals is a huge benefit to your overall quality of life. It helps you stay on track and not get distracted by little things that may try to interfere with your desires. From your family to your friends to your career, having defined goals allows you to put what’s important first so you appreciate that aspect of your life even more. Setting goals and working toward achieving them allows you the opportunity to feel good about yourself with the knowledge that you’re giving your full effort and putting your belief in something.
With these helpful tips, go out there and make 2019 your best year yet. Set your goals high and dedicate yourself to achieving them!
