If you’re taking time to read this, something has been called forth within you to learn and grow as a leader in your life and business. There are thousands of books, classes, videos, and workshops on leadership. What’s difficult to find is how to become a leader people actually want to follow – one who leads with a level of self-awareness and personal reflection that allows them to make stronger, healthier connections with their employees and peers. Conscious leaders are simply better at working collaboratively and in partnership with others, which creates more powerful, productive teams that thrive.
If you’re ready to advance your business or career, start today by learning the five aspects of conscious leadership, and begin to incorporate them into your life both personally and professionally.
Having Self Awareness
When we lead consciously, we have to first start with understanding ourself and who and what we’re about. This is no easy task. It requires us to take time to figure out what kind of “stuff” we’ve developed over the years that’s holding us back from living and leading fully, as the very best we can be. By “stuff” I’m referring to those pesky belief systems, behaviors, self-sabotaging methods, and negative thinking that get in the way of being fully present for others. In conscious leadership, we get the unique privilege of figuring out how and why we do the things we do, and learning all about the types of situations, circumstances, or even people who trigger us to act in a way that doesn’t serve us or others. What comes next? Getting rid of all the baggage that doesn’t serve us and replacing it with new techniques, methods, beliefs, behaviors, and activities that do.
Conscious leadership requires us to be intentional in how we lead our lives. Everything we do has great meaning, whether we know it or not. For example, when we’re intentional, we’re consciously choosing what to do and how to communicate. We set goals and gain greater clarity on what our priorities are so we can make conscious choices on what will best serve us that day or even that moment. We learn when to say “yes” or “no” to something requested of us. This takes away any need to do things out of guilt or shame. All of this intentional behavior creates a clear pathway to our individual feelings of success, and quite frankly, takes pressure off of us to have to “be” something we’re not.
Being authentic is what many of us strive for in life. I always used to say, “How can I live an authentic life in what feels like an inauthentic world?” The truth is, the world is not inauthentic; the world just is. It’s my responsibility to show up as the best version of myself, no matter what others expect. That’s living authentically. As conscious leaders, we do what’s best no matter what others might think. We stop trying to please everyone else and learn to get in touch with our own greatness. We begin to live, communicate, and love ourselves in a much deeper way, with no need for outside approval as life becomes an inner expression of meaning and purpose.
As conscious leaders, we take responsibility for our actions. I can’t sugarcoat this one. If we’re truly leading our lives and businesses in a conscious way, we have no issue apologizing or owning our mistakes. We begin to view them as a way to learn and grow versus a bad character trait. The pressure gets removed so the gloves come off, allowing us to make mistakes, apologize, and move on. Taking responsibility becomes a way of setting our own mind at ease, which takes the power away from the effect that a situation can have on us. We free ourselves in the process.
Standing in Your Power
In conscious leadership, we begin to stand in our power. We are all powerful beings who have been put here on Earth at this time to live fully and shine our light brightly. No one else is exactly like you or will ever be you in all your magnificence. Learning how to stand in your own personal power in any situation is the foundation of leading consciously. This includes not playing small for others. When we show up as our powerfully authentic self, those around us will feel like they can do the same. It’s all part of being powerfully you!
