Click It or Ticket Mobilization
During this year’s Click It or Ticket mobilization, Diamond Bar-Walnut Sheriff’s Station will join law enforcement agencies nationwide in intensifying efforts to enforce seat belt laws, with a special attention during nighttime hours.
The mobilization, which runs from May 22 through June 4, is a high-visibility enforcement effort created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to crack down on seat belt violators.
According to NHTSA statistics, nearly half of the motor vehicle occupants who died in crashes in 2013 were unrestrained. Of the 638 children age 12 and younger involved in fatal motor vehicle accidents in 2013, more than a third were unrestrained. NHTSA reports also indicate that more traffic vehicle deaths occur during the nighttime hours of 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., and that more than half of the passenger occupants killed were not wearing their seat belts. As a result, nighttime enforcement will continue to be a priority in this year’s mobilization.
Under current State law, drivers are responsible for seat belt compliance for all passengers. lf the seat belt violator is over 16 years of age, both the driver and the passenger can be cited separately. Offenses may also result in points to the violator’s driving record, which could raise insurance rates.
