Great California Shakeout
“Drop, Cover, and Hold On”
After an earthquake, have you ever thought “Boy, was I lucky this time!” Don’t leave it to luck! Get the facts on how to protect yourself during the shaking. Major earthquakes may happen anywhere you work, live, or travel in California. The Great California ShakeOut is your chance to practice how to protect yourself, and serves as a reminder to everyone to take steps to get prepared. Join millions of Californians and “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” during the Great California Shakeout at 10:19 a.m. on Thursday, October 19th.
Whenever you feel shaking, always Drop, Cover and Hold On. Take cover under a sturdy desk or table, hold on to the desk or table leg so that the desk or table stays on top of you, and keep your head down until the shaking stops. If you don’t have a sturdy desk or table nearby, follow these steps:
DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down. Stay low to crawl to shelter if it is nearby.
COVER your head and neck with both arms and hands.
HOLD ON until shaking stops. Be prepared for aftershocks.
