Aren’t we fortunate to live in Southern California, where the climate teases us to wear swimwear practically all year long? In the past, a woman donning a bathing suit for summer experienced the thought as terrifying. Unless you were a Victoria’s Secret model, the daunting task of shopping for the skimpy attire would cause stress and horror. How about we throw that old rule book out the window? To all of you energetic, ever-so-confident, present day sun lovers, it’s time to celebrate summer and enjoy your body in all its glory!
Never mind size, shape or age, let’s get the word out – we love our bodies and are feeling better about our physical appearance every day. It may be too soon for long-term statistics, but my observations tell me that the tide is changing toward accepting our real-life, naturally aging bodies. We live in a world where large and small sizes are being featured more, dance competitions are adding master elite categories, and prominent fashion models are succeeding with promotions using wording such as “pro-aging” instead of “anti-aging” in products and cosmetics.
So when it comes to choosing bathing suits this season, feel free to have fun and accentuate your untamed curves (or lack of). And don’t worry so much about what others think when you bare (most of) it all, but rather enjoy life and this weather-friendly location you live in!
Instead of letting fashion trends dictate what’s in this season, take a good look at tried-and-true styles that never change. Grace your body with colors you love and shapely fittings that make you happy. I spent almost my entire young adult life wearing neutrals because that’s what my mother told me to wear. But I never felt happy in them – only invisible. So, if you’re ready to jump out of your comfort zone and try something new – do it! Stripes or florals make you nervous? Go for solids. Bikini suits too revealing? Then choose a sexy full-coverage one piece. Not comfortable accentuating your chest area? No problem – try a plunging backside.
Have fun with swimwear meant for lounging. Most swimsuits never hit the water, so don’t limit your choices to practicality. Choose playful styles with mesh inlays over your not-so-perfect areas. Shop for matching or contrasting sarongs to wrap around your waist, then strut your stuff with confidence when you stroll the pool deck, patio, or sandy beach. Transparent sarongs and scarves tied around the neck and draped over your swimwear are designed for flaunting. These soft-flowing, see-through sheers let you feel frisky covered up – when you’re really not.
This year, no more terror in the dressing rooms – tackle swimsuit shopping with a new attitude. Be bold, beautiful, and summer daring!
