If you are a shorty like me and like to stretch every inch to your advantage – think tall! After a life of successes (through many failures, but triumphs nevertheless), I like to think that my unscientific way of living beyond my size has something to do with it. Little ladies, there is hope, in spite of a lifetime of tailoring pants made for stilted legs and asking strangers to reach for items on the top shelf at the grocery store.
When you want to be taken seriously, there are things you can do to live large without sacrificing your darling dignity.
Fit and Fabulous
There is not much real estate on body frames of five-foot-three or less, so every pound we gain showcases that we are skipping workouts or stress eating. Simply put: stay fit! To elongate your silhouette, wear outfits with one or two colors and let the pieces become one. Unless the shoes match the outfit, wear black or nude, and let the focus be waist up. But that doesn’t mean you have to choose boring footwear. Women who successfully wear high heels don’t just feel inches taller, they look statuesque. But if heels prevent you from walking comfortably, or you are not accustomed to the bizarre high-heel ritual, it’s best not to start mid-life. To enjoy a powerful stride in heels, you must love it, own it, and have perfect posture to keep your back centered and balanced. Do wear low heels or pointed flats, and avoid shoes with ankle straps that can make legs look thicker than they are. Carry smaller handbags and choose solid-colored dresses with a V- or U-neck.
Use Your Grown-up Voice
Don’t let your youthful size bring out a childish tone. You’re an adult; speak like one. Voice experts say that 38 percent of first impressions are based on the sound quality of our voice. Lower your voice just a notch when talking business or speaking with authority, meet and greet people with solid eye contact and a confident handshake, and save giggling or high-pitched squeals of laughter for girls’ night out.
Posture is Powerful
Own your pint-sized stature. Standing proud does wonders for your appearance and the way people perceive you. Right now, stand up and look at your profile in a full-length mirror. Are you slouching? Straighten yourself – chin up; shoulders back; eyes straight ahead. You should be able to draw a vertical line from ear lobe, to shoulder, to hip, to ankle. Feel taller already? Now, walk briskly like the confident woman you are, as if you always know exactly where you are going.
In the end, it doesn’t matter how tall or short you are – you’ll only look as fabulous as you feel. Just remember that no matter how many times someone at the office or a social setting pats you on the head, don’t ever let anyone look down on you!
