Diabetes is becoming an epidemic, with 1.5 million Americans diagnosed every year. Eighty percent will die either from the disease or problems caused by it. Health complications include such things as ulcerations, neuropathy, amputation, kidney failure, blindness, and heart disease.
Yet many myths remain about diabetes.
Myth #1: Diabetes is Hereditary
Type I diabetes, also known as “juvenile-onset diabetes,” is an autoimmune disease that may be hereditary. However, Type 2 diabetes, also known as “insulin resistant diabetes” isn’t, and it’s almost always a preventable disease based on lifestyle. Because lifestyle factors can prevent and reverse Type 2 diabetes, there is much a person can do to control it.
Myth #2: A Diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes Means a Lifetime of Prescription Drugs
Epigenetic research shows that lifestyle factors have a greater impact on health and well-being than genetics. This is great news for Type 2 diabetics. By changing diet and other lifestyle factors, many people can eliminate prescription drugs with the guidance and support of a physician.
Myth #3: Weight Loss Will Control Type 2 Diabetes
Weight gain is a symptom of diabetes, not the cause. As blood glucose increases, the body converts the excess glucose to fat and stores it. As long as there is plenty of glucose for the body to use, it won’t burn fat for fuel. What and when to eat are key to both controlling the diabetes and losing the extra weight.
In the next issue, we’ll explore common myths regarding managing Type 2 diabetes with diet.
